The characters of the short story A Shawl For Anita include the mother and her three children. The middle child is the one who narrates the story, and Anita is the youngest child whom she envied with. The middle child sees her mother favors and gives special love for Anita. She grew up thinking that way, but her mother only did that because the youngest child, Anita, was sickly when they were young. As they grow old, their mother got weaker and her capability to do things lessened. One day, Anita asked her mother to knit her shawl. The middle child thought that it was ridiculous because their mother is too weak and old to do that. Little did she know that Anita did that because she knew that their mother loves knitting too much and she doesn't want to feel that she is useless because of her age.
